Dan is American. Zoe is English. They met at a wedding in America. They were married in England.
I spent a few hours the day before the wedding scouting the beach of Frinton and Walton for locations to use. It was pure sensory overload the whole time. Every turn was something new and exciting that I wanted to use as a background. That night during the rehearsal dinner Steve (the best man) told me about Naze Tower, which was up the other way on the beach from the direction I had walked. Jet lagged, I woke up with the sun the next morning and walked up the beach with Steve to check it out.
Jack. Freaking. Pot. Castle-like tower cliff-side by the sea??? Yes please! This was exactly the look I had wanted. There was a point on the cliff that stuck out and I knew immediately “the shot”. (It became number 26 in this post if you want to go check it out). The other great benefit of this spot is that it had dramatically different looks in short distance from each other. Time is your enemy on any wedding day and travel eats up the most. So a location must be able to give you more than just one thing. The bottom of the beach was mossy, rocky and wet. On the cliff side there was brown dune grass (do they call it dune grass in England?) and a trail with green vegetation. Then at the top there was the tower and sea-side overlook. I took a few test shots and we left back to eat breakfast.
With my posed shots all planned out I then began documenting the day. I am not going to write to you about it. I feel that is a bit redundant. Enjoy the story of Dan and Zoe’s wedding day below.
-Cheers

Mike – it’s not brown dune grass… it’s wheat.
