I always refer to shooting portraits of kids as “cheating”. As long as I have a crisp, clean, well-exposed shot, then the rest is just pointing the camera at a cute kid. Sure they can be fussy, but when you have the luxury of blocking out 1-2 hours for a portrait shoot, being able to take time and wait for the good moods and real smiles is just a matter of patience. The Delp kids were not even fussy at all so getting good shots felt even more like “cheating”.

It’s family portrait season here at ISPhotographic. Over the next month the family portraits are going to be taking over the blog.  My love of Prophetstown and picnic tables continued for the Ohland family shoot, that said, image 2 is my favorite of the session. What is yours? Let me know in the comments!

We have been spoiled here with a warm fall.  Well, at 8am for Matt’s shoot there was frost on the ground! A total wake up call that winter is upon us.  Ah well, at least we did not plan on doing some action shots that required a tank top and shorts… oops.

Matt was a great sport the whole day and the only complaining I remember was over laughter and all in jest. Matt is my kind of people. The kind that can laugh at the curve balls life throws at you.

I run into the misguided belief that people need to be extroverted and outgoing in order to photograph well. False! Mycah was completely shy and reserved, and that turned out to be a good thing that comes across in her portraits. In fact, image 5 is one of my favorite portrait captures of the year.

This weekend marked the launch of the ioSafe-ISPhotographic Motorsports effort! Sponsored by Abstract Technologies, Artisan Electric, Maximumedia Design, Miracles Fitness, Rubia Flower Market and Eight38 Sign Co, I made a highly successful and enjoyable trip to Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham Alabama over the weekend of November 25-27. Check back in soon for the whole story and some more announcements! -Dave

I wish I could take more credit for the golf shot on this post, but I can’t. Leslie had a distinct look and feel she wanted to accomplish and I simply made her vision a reality. Location, wardrobe, even the exact pose they are doing, was all set up by Leslie. All I did was add in lighting to make them pop out from the background on the cloudy grey day and add a vintage/aged look to the edit.

Drew and Leslie both work in the iconic downtown Lafayette courthouse. The last image (image 4) was shot inside in the rotunda at night. The simple dramatic look of the image was due to circumstance. Only the security lights were turned on. So what you see is only my studio strobe light.

You never know what to expect when a High School Senior walks through the door. From the moment I pointed the camera at Wiley I knew he was charming, and by the end of the session I also knew he was a gentleman. I enjoyed our session immensely.

Even though I’ve known the Johnsons for years, we have just managed to get together for some photos. From the studio to Tapawingo Park, to People’s Brewing, we worked to capture energy, happiness and love. How did we do? Do you have a favorite? Noah and Kailey wanted something a little different for their Mini Engagement Session (a full session to follow later). They brought several props of their own, and I contributed a few. Can you spot mine? I think number three will get all of the attention, but Kailey’s smile in two is priceless! What do you think? Comment below!
